About this calculator

How it works

GPA is a credit-weighted average of course grade points. Each course grade point is multiplied by its credit hours, the quality points are added together, and the total is divided by the total credits. This calculator works for semester GPA, term GPA, and simple cumulative GPA planning when you enter all included courses.

Formulas

Formulas used

Quality points

quality points = grade points x credits

GPA

GPA = sum(quality points) / sum(credits)

Required future GPA

future GPA needed = (target GPA x total credits after future term - current quality points) / future credits

Worked example

Example calculation

Semester GPA

Grades 4.0, 3.7, 3.3 with credits 3, 4, 3 gives GPA 3.68

Quality points

A 3.7 grade in a 4-credit course contributes 14.8 quality points

Assumptions and limits

Before using the result

  • The calculator uses numeric grade points, such as 4.0 for A, 3.7 for A-, or 3.3 for B+.
  • Grade points and credits must be entered in matching order.
  • Schools may use different GPA scales, weighting rules, repeated-course policies, pass/fail handling, or rounding rules.

FAQ

GPA Calculator questions

How do I calculate GPA with credit hours?

Multiply each course grade point by its credit hours, add the quality points, then divide by the total credits.

Can this calculate semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Yes. For semester GPA, enter only that term. For cumulative GPA, enter all courses you want included or use current cumulative values converted into quality points and credits.

What grade point values should I enter?

Use the scale from your school. A common 4.0 scale is A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, D=1.0, and F=0.
