About this calculator

How it works

A test grade percentage is the number of correct answers divided by the total number of questions, multiplied by 100. Use it for quizzes, exams, assignments, practice tests, and grading checks where every question is worth the same amount.

Formulas

Formulas used

Percentage grade

grade = correct answers / total questions x 100

Missed questions

missed = total questions - correct answers

Correct answers needed

needed = ceiling(target grade / 100 x total questions)

Worked example

Example calculation

Grade

42 correct out of 50 gives 84%

Target check

For a 90% target on a 50-question test, you need at least 45 correct answers

Assumptions and limits

Before using the result

  • This calculator assumes each question has equal value.
  • Letter grades use a common scale: A is 90% or higher, B is 80-89.99%, C is 70-79.99%, D is 60-69.99%, and F is below 60%.
  • Weighted tests, partial credit, dropped questions, curves, and custom school grading policies can change the final grade.

FAQ

Test Grade Calculator questions

How do I calculate my test grade percentage?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 42 correct out of 50 is 84%.

Can this calculator tell me how many questions I need for an A?

Yes. Enter 90 as the target grade to see the minimum number of correct answers needed for a 90% score. Adjust the target if your class uses a different cutoff.

Does this work for weighted or partial-credit tests?

Only if each entered question is worth the same amount. For weighted sections, partial credit, or point-based grading, calculate earned points divided by total points instead.
